Reflections on Learning 2.0

Wow is right! I finally finished this new exploration in Learning 2.0 and I now know that it is just the beginning of my education with new online technology. When I first started with a blog I felt accomplishment just adding to the personal design of it, now I have so much more knowledge from these self discovery exercises. The discovery of Flicker, RSS feeds, Library Things, Image Generator and YouTube are my favorites. I enjoy getting my daily feeds on so many topics which include favorite quotes and new puppy care. The goal of learning Web2.0 has helped contribute to my passion of always being a lifelong learner. Yes, of course I would participate again in a new discovery program!

Audiobooks and other Downloadables

While getting familiar with The Suffolk Wave :Your Digital Library, I was able to check out two items. One item was an audiobook, 101 Dalmations, and the other was a video called Stormalong. I found the Suffolk Wave very user-friendly. It took less than a minute to check out these digital items. I loved the easy feature of looking at Your Cart, Your Checkouts and Your Waitlists. This is an excellent service for all library patrons, that I am sure will continue to grow. Thanks to all the wonderful Suffolk County Libraries that participate in this new innovative feature. Time to download...listen and look!

Podcasts

I subscribed to a series called Childrensbookradio, through the Yahoo Podcasts directory. This is a new Podcast about children's books that I feel would be beneficial as a children's librarian.

What a Wonderful World!

One of my favorite songs by the late Louis Armstrong. I found this on YouTube. I thought it was beautiful.
I like YouTube. I find it easy to use and applied in a library setting...I feel it can possibly be used in the future for the motivational needs of staff.

Discovering Web 2.0 Tools

BIBLIO.COM
It was interesting to view the Web 2.0 Awards. Being a little familiar now with Technorati and Bloglines, I decided to search Biblio.com. This sight could be used in the library for a collection basis. It was user-friendly and reminded me of Amazon.com but only for more used, out-of-print and rare books.

Zoho!

Getting to know Zoho. Seems similiar to word and publisher, but web-based. Pretty cool though. This application would be good for collaboration in the office while possibly working on a project. It wa easy to insert an emotion. I'm just playing around...

Playing Around With PBWiki!

This exercise took me awhile. Yes, I had to play around with this one. The simple syntax was not too simple for me, though I did finally get to add a favorite vacation spot..Montauk!

So What's in a Wiki?

This exercise gave a really good overview about Wikis. I definitely gained knowledge about them that I had no clue about prior to viewing the variety of resources available.

I liked the library wiki, Library Success: A Best Practice Wiki, quite organized. This wiki is useful for all staff in every department. As a librarian, the Reader's Advisory topic area had many helpful suggestions as well as the Programming subject area.

Check out Wikis in Plain English YouTube video. What do you think?

This entire exercise assisted me in gaining new knowledge about Wiki, guiding me through another informative step in Learning 2.0.

LEARNING 2.0

"Perspectives on Library 2.0"

I found these articles very interesting. I particurlary liked "Into a New World of Librarianship" by Michael Stephens and "To a Temporary Place in Time.." by Dr. Wendy Schultz.

Stephens article gets to the point and outlines the most important traits of Librarian 2.0. I couldn't agree more with him that user-centered libraries breakdown barriers and allow users access wherever they are: home, work, commuting, school, or at the library. Another strong point in this article is Library 2.0 listens to staff and users when planning, and learns from both successes and failures. His last comment says it all " Never stop dreaming about the best library service".

Dr. Schultz and her vision, which takes us from Library 2.0 to Library 4.0, takes us to the top! Imagine a library world incorporated like a retreat with luxury spa library service and knowledge. I just love it!

Getting to Know YouTube

Michael Buble - One of my favorite performing artist/singer. His songs are filled with so much energy and emotion!

Technorati!

While exploring popular blog, Boing Boing has so much information. I am not sure I have much use for it at this time and it felt overwhelming. However in my results I came upon You Tube-there are so many videos out there. Some really great ones, some so silly and some so stupid.
Technorati Profile
Never thought I would get so wrapped up in the blogosphere! Two months ago I didn't even know what a blogosphere was. I have now claimed my blog and added tags.
More to follow...

del.icio.us

Well, I finally set up an account with del.cio.us and actually created a few tags. My tags include health and librarian professional. I can see myself using this social bookmarking manager at times, and yes, it is definitely unstructured (that bothers me a bit). I bookmarked an article on "5 Reasons Not to Drink Bottled Water". Feeling a little neurotic??

Finding Feeds

Wow! Learning about RSS news feeds was a bit overwhelming, but I am catching on. I now understand the concept behind this all. Now that I created my Bloglines account I have quite a few feeds. It is a nice convenience to have information on topics that you select updated PRONTO! I enjoy Dilbert, Quotes of the Day, The Shifted Librarian, Dictionary.com/Word of the Day. Finding feeds on Syndic8.com and Technorati confuse me a bit, but I like Topix.net and Feedster. I find really cool "Feed of the Day" from Feedster. In viewing other blogs, I learn more about what's new and out there!

"A Picture is Worth 1000 Words"

After checking out Worth 1000 on the Web. I was fascinated by many images. I could not believe what can be done with image editing.

This website full of image manipulation and art contest was interesting and freaky!

Lifelong Learning

My easiest habit with lifelong learning is PLAY.
However habit #1- BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND
needs more focus for me, I tend to get off-track.
